With baseball season less than a week away from beginning, the University of Memphis baseball team is preparing by playing a five-inning scrimmage against each other. The team was divided in half, making it the home Blue team versus the away Grey team.

It was a freezing cold afternoon, with the temperature dropping as low as 30 degrees. The cold weather made it tougher for hitters, because the weather kept the ball from traveling as far as it usually would.

2011 World Series Champion and former closing pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, Jason Motte, is now the head of player development for the University of Memphis Tiger’s Baseball Team. He is in charge of pitching for the team’s batting practice.

The team’s warmed up for about a little over one hour before they started the scrimmage. The starting pitchers for both sides warmed up by throwing indoors, while the rest of the team did warmed ups outside in the cold.

Chris Durham started at pitcher for the Grey team and allowed one earned run while pitching four and one third of an inning. Takoda Metoxen relieved Durham in the bottom of the fifth, earning the last two outs and the save.

Hunter Smith started at pitcher for the Blue team and pitched four innings allowing one earned run. Josh Scheer relieved Smith in the top of fifth inning and allowed one earned run while pitching one inning.

University of Memphis Tiger’s infielder, Ian Bibiloni, connects on pitch during batting practice, hitting the ball over the left field wall.

Ian Bibiloni drove in the first and only run of the game for the Blue team, driving Alec Trela in bottom of the second inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Cale Hennemann scored from second base on a ground ball by Payton Marshall that did not leave the infield. They Grey team took the lead two batters later, when Keith Stepter drove home Kyle Ouellette.

The Blue team failed to score in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the Grey team the winners of this scrimmage by a score of 2-1.

The Memphis Tigers take one last look at the scoreboard to see where the game turned and where they will need to improve. The scoreboard shows the Tigers they have to start getting more hits, producing more runs and stop committing so many errors on defense.
