Kappa Delta got creative by offering free haircuts on Monday in the Beale Room at the University center where 35 women gave their hair and $152 was donated to children suffering from hair loss due to cancer.
The event known as cuts for confidence, also raised money for Kappa Delta’s Up ‘til Dawn fundraiser. Instead of donating hair, some donated money for the fundraiser. $152 of that money was donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Kappa Delta member, Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick said, “To make beauty standards different.”
“You don’t have to have long hair to be beautiful, and we get to donate to St. Jude,” Kappa Delta member Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick said, “We want to make beauty standards different.”
In order to donate hair, students had to have 6 to 8 inches of hair. If a student did not have long enough hair, any student could still participate in the event by donating a minimum of $10.
When asked about donating her hair to St. Jude, Kappa Delta member Caroline Frasier said, “It was great, but also terrifying.”
The UofM Kappa Delta chapter was not the only Kappa Delta chapter to participate in the event. The Kappa Delta chapter on UT’s campus in Knoxville helped as well.
“I have two daughters in Kappa Delta at UT in Knoxville,” professional hairdresser Cindy Molner said, “So I do what I can to help the Kappa Delta sorority.”
“They get joy from donating their hair for cancer to St. Jude.” Vice President of Kappa Delta Justine McGoff said.
The event was a creative way to donate for a great cause that went along with Kappa Delta’s philanthropy. “At the end of the event, 35 women donated hair donated and $152 was raised for St. Jude,” McGoff said.
